Gardening Spring/Summer 2014 - Learning The Basics

Spring/Summer '14 – Let's Garden

Hello everyone this is Emmer Jean! And as Spring '14 transitions into Summer 2014 were all wondering...what are the Summer flowers going look like this year? Will we have another exceptionally beautiful Summer of Roses like we did in 2010 or maybe some beautifully stagnate Tulips quietly displaying a unique array of colors and patterns. Enough talk about flowers, let's garden!
Growing is therapy as we all know and we all need therapy...of some sort! So lets grow something. We all have some dirt laying around somewhere, or at least we should Miracle Grow). I've had a garden my whole life, except for now. Due to my situation so I’ll blog about it. So whatever you grow send pictures so we can all enjoy in the progress! Can you dig it !? So get your garden tools out, start your compost heap find some seeds and let's grow something!
In an earlier article I mentioned an Almanac. I received quite a few responses stating they had one but couldn't read it. Okay so first off my suggestion when it comes to Almanacs is the McDonald's Almanac. This is one of the more complete Almanacs with information by region like it should be. So once you find find out what region your in simply call your local observatory and to find out the position of the Moon. Now where cooking let's get that garden started. Ideally any dirt is good dirt especially once you add your compost. But if possible swing over to Wal-Mart and pick up a few bags of their Miracle Grow Soil. It already has a nice array of necessary minerals mixed in, so you can get right to work.
Once you've got your region's position of the Moon and some good dirt let's find a spot. Where you plant it is very important so pick a good area. It is very important for a garden, your garden to exist in a “special” spot so find one. If possible plant to the North, Northwest according to my experience gardens love the morning's nice cool North, Northwest Sun as opposed to the evenings hotter Southwest Sun for productive growing.
Now go back to your Almanac and find your region and simply follow directions. I mean like for instance here in my region my Almanac tells me May 31st is the best day for above-ground planting for the month of May. June on the other hand allows you to plant your above-ground producing vegetables on the very 1st day of the month and then again on the 7th. A few more days also fall in June but you should be done by the 7th. Or consult your own McDonald's Almanac for more info!
We've covered a few of the more important aspects of gardening right here in this article today like...
  • When to plant
  • Soil/Compost
  • Where to plant
In the next article (blog) we'll go into possibly the most important aspect of gardening altogether, “what to plant” so think about it and what you would like to grow in your own garden and remember whether it grows above or below ground does matter so keep track. So go find a Special Spot lay down your compost as a base and grab yourself some Miracle-Grow, a few seeds and let's grow some nice juicy veggies this Summer '14!
