Xtreme Gardening - Performance Enhancing Products

Has anyone tried this Xtreme gardening line of products? I would like to know know how Xtreme fruit taste if there is an Xtreme difference or not? I mean I do agree in regards to Gardening being an Xtreme occupation I mean I myself have lost 2 good men to Gardening over the past year alone. So I know just how Xtreme Gardening can be. But I would like to know more about these particular performance-enhancing products guaranteed to yield unlimited super-fruit.
         I mean what does cost matter when a company is able to express its vision as clearly this;
"With Xtreme Gardening products, gardeners are unlocking their plants true potential and reaching new levels of production not achieved through conventional inputs." I mean wow I'm in! which is a good thing because I've clicked around their site for a good 20 minutes and cannot find a price. So apparently it doesn't matter just swipe your card, this is Xtreme Gardening! No time for questions we need to unleash the power if our soil immediately, at all cost!

I came across the Xtreme Tea! I thought now here is something useful. I figured I could have a cup or two of this Xtreme Tea and go dancing. Seems it would work best on the dance floor or battlefield, this was Xtreme Tea. Something it seemed you drank after coming within inches of your own life! So as I clicked around to order a bag or two I found out this Tea was much Xtreme for me! There was no guarantee I could survive it! This Xtreme Tea I discovered was for my plants! And they expected me to brew it! So I masked my disappointments and moved on.
Next I looked into more organic and natural products I wanted some Xtreme Bell Peppers, which I figured would turn out some Xtreme burritos!  So I clicked around until I came across the "Xtreme Sample Kit" I thought immediately how cool it would be to have an Extremely small amount of each Xtreme product! So I ordered it...or tried to. I went through their website and could not find a price. So I swung on over to Amazon then eBay I found prices there and they lived up to the product name Xtreme. Some of the Xtreme products was asking $60 bucks a shot for a 2.2 Pound bag. So after taking an Xtreme look at the products offered I decided I would continue to "water" my plants, fruits and vegetables and watch them grow as they have been doing for decades.
So I figured I could also create some "Super" soil of my liking and a lot more than 2.2 pounds for a lot less than $60. To cultivate the soul needed to yield "Xtreme Fruits & Vegetables all you really needed was 3 key ingredients. the nice part is you don't have to have all 3 yet anyone of the 3 can contribute significantly to your gardens production.
A good start is also some relatively good soil. Make sure soil is well ventilated, loose and turned often. A nice way to begin is to cover the soil with mulch. Organic mulches are currently the most popular option simply because some people advise against using high-carbon materials such as straw or leaves, since soil microbes “rob” available nitrogen from the soil in order to break down the excess amounts of carbon. This is only true, however, if we incorporate these high-carbon sources into the soil. However, if high-carbon materials are laid down on top of soil as mulches there shouldn't be any problem. Since the mulch retains soil's moisture and protects against temperature extremes. Microbes, earthworms and other forms of soil life can “nibble” at the mulch, and slowly incorporate their residues into the topsoil as well.
Like I was saying earlier its easy as 1,2,3! take a look at the 3 simple methods below to improve your own soil. Remember any and all of them will significantly improve your soil!

1. Fertilizer

One of the best ways to improve soils nutrient content is by adding organic fertilizer. This is usually in the form of manure from cows, pigs, rabbits, bats, chickens, and horses. Do not use droppings from carnivorous animals. Manure should be aged properly before it is used. This can be done by allowing the manure to dry or by composting it. Once you add the manure, mix it into the soil well. If you are adding it in the spring, make sure to do it several weeks before you begin planting.

2. Compost

Adding compost will always improve soil quality. It is comprised of decomposed or partially decomposed organic matter that provides nitrogen and potassium to the soil. Compost also encourages the growth of microrganisms which break down many minerals into a form plants can more easily absorb. The microrganisms and worms also act as natural aerators in the soil which help supply oxygen. You can use regular compost which includes yard wastes and organic kitchen scraps, or leaf mould, which is a compost comprise solely of leaves.

3. Wood Ash

If you have a fireplace, you can use some of the left over ash to add to the soil. Wood ash adds nutrients and will also absorb toxins that the soil has accumulated. Break the charcoal into small pieces and work it into the soil.

Worst case scenario a good collection of grass clippings and leaves should mulch into something useful. Just remember go for the Xtreme "FREE soil by using these 3 steps for good soil, good homemade soil. I think I;m going to combine some Wood Ash, Fertilizer, and Compost and see if I can produce myself some Xtreme Tomatoes, which hopefully again will translate into some Xtreme Hamburgers! Wish me luck!

Compost Heap - Another Look

I received a lot of questions and comments about the Compost Heap I mentioned in one of my articles. So let's take another closer look at a Compost Heap and find out just exactly what they do.....

Compost

What is it?
Organic Matter that has been decomposed as a fertilizer and soil amender. Compost is a key ingredient the world over, especially in organic farming. Simply put, the process of composting requires making a heap of wetted organic matter known as green waste (leaves, food waste) and waiting for the materials to break down into humus after a period of weeks or months. Modern, methodical composting is a multi-step, closely monitored process with measured inputs of water, air, and carbon- and nitrogen-rich materials. The decomposition process is aided by shredding the plant matter, adding water and ensuring proper aeration by regularly turning the mixture. Worms and fungi further break up the material.

Whats Required ?
In order to create and cultivate a successful fertile compost there are 4 major ingredients all very important to the process:
  • 1. Carbon — for energy; the microbial  oxidation of carbon produces the heat, if included at suggested levels.
    • High carbon materials tend to be brown and dry.
  • 2. Nitrogen — to grow and reproduce more organisms to oxidize the carbon.
    • High nitrogen materials tend to be green (i.e fruits and vegetables) and wet.
  • 3. Oxygen — for oxidizing the carbon, the decomposition process.
  • 4. Water — and of course finally water, needed here in the right amounts to maintain activity without causing anaerobic conditions.

Recently I received a comment from a reader that stated their heap was stinking with flies all around. Well the fact is that the compost heap should NOT stink! See nothing cooked or processed should be added into your compost heap. Only natural and more importantly RAW ingredients is what should be allowed to decompose and fertilize the soil within. So my suggestion would be to stop adding anything that has been cooked to your compost heap, keep it natural for the best results.

Another issue I should mention in regards to your compost heap is that you should "turn it" often. I turn mine right now in its early stages twice a day. Once at Sun up and again at Sun down. Turn it!  What I  mean by that is simply take a shovel and overturn the dirt along with all the clippings make sure you get a thorough turning exposing the bottom of the heap as much as possible. Lots of fellow gardeners are turning to the "Compost Tumblers" as a way of making sure the heap is properly mixed each day.
An almost unknown fact is that you can add ANIMAL POOP to your compost heap! If you can find someone with a Ranch or a Farm with rabbits, chickens, horses (has to be dried first) or even Cows ask if you can have some of their poop! Animal Poop is excellent fertilizer. Ideally you would allow it to dry out before adding it to the heap (keep smell down).

NOTE:  If anything begins to grow out of you r compost heap let it get up to about 4-5 inches to ensure stability then transplant.

So take a look a few of the pointers above and create a nice fertile compost heap of your own !

Seasonal Foods - Whats Growing Where You Live

Mothers Day just passed so lets all have a glass of wine in retrospect...We have a quite a few things to cover in relation to Mother's Day so let's get started. I can only hope most of you have beautiful children like me and received an abundance of beautiful flowers and gifts from them showing them! Showing clearly their undying love for "Their Mom". Like my children did. Over the next few days I'll be writing articles to show you how to take care of those flowers and make them last much longer than normal. Now what to do with ALL the money your children put into your Mother's Day card is up to you! Okay back to reality...
Hopefully you read my article on The Basics I wrote the other day. It dealt mostly with the primary how, when and why's of gardening. One of the most important things most gardeners seems to overlook is what's growing where they live. Gardening is a science in many ways so what you plant, when you plant and how you plant really matters for a nice lush productive return on vegetables. So I've placed a Seasonal Foods guide right here on my home page (lower right). The guide is great as it gives you option of selecting your state and the month in which you want to plant. It then displays a list of EVERYTHING that's in season in your state in that month! Its a great guide to have access to 100% free and very accurate so be sure and scroll down and select your state and find out whats growing right now!

Gardening Spring/Summer 2014 - Learning The Basics

Spring/Summer '14 – Let's Garden

Hello everyone this is Emmer Jean! And as Spring '14 transitions into Summer 2014 were all wondering...what are the Summer flowers going look like this year? Will we have another exceptionally beautiful Summer of Roses like we did in 2010 or maybe some beautifully stagnate Tulips quietly displaying a unique array of colors and patterns. Enough talk about flowers, let's garden!
Growing is therapy as we all know and we all need therapy...of some sort! So lets grow something. We all have some dirt laying around somewhere, or at least we should Miracle Grow). I've had a garden my whole life, except for now. Due to my situation so I’ll blog about it. So whatever you grow send pictures so we can all enjoy in the progress! Can you dig it !? So get your garden tools out, start your compost heap find some seeds and let's grow something!
In an earlier article I mentioned an Almanac. I received quite a few responses stating they had one but couldn't read it. Okay so first off my suggestion when it comes to Almanacs is the McDonald's Almanac. This is one of the more complete Almanacs with information by region like it should be. So once you find find out what region your in simply call your local observatory and to find out the position of the Moon. Now where cooking let's get that garden started. Ideally any dirt is good dirt especially once you add your compost. But if possible swing over to Wal-Mart and pick up a few bags of their Miracle Grow Soil. It already has a nice array of necessary minerals mixed in, so you can get right to work.
Once you've got your region's position of the Moon and some good dirt let's find a spot. Where you plant it is very important so pick a good area. It is very important for a garden, your garden to exist in a “special” spot so find one. If possible plant to the North, Northwest according to my experience gardens love the morning's nice cool North, Northwest Sun as opposed to the evenings hotter Southwest Sun for productive growing.
Now go back to your Almanac and find your region and simply follow directions. I mean like for instance here in my region my Almanac tells me May 31st is the best day for above-ground planting for the month of May. June on the other hand allows you to plant your above-ground producing vegetables on the very 1st day of the month and then again on the 7th. A few more days also fall in June but you should be done by the 7th. Or consult your own McDonald's Almanac for more info!
We've covered a few of the more important aspects of gardening right here in this article today like...
  • When to plant
  • Soil/Compost
  • Where to plant
In the next article (blog) we'll go into possibly the most important aspect of gardening altogether, “what to plant” so think about it and what you would like to grow in your own garden and remember whether it grows above or below ground does matter so keep track. So go find a Special Spot lay down your compost as a base and grab yourself some Miracle-Grow, a few seeds and let's grow some nice juicy veggies this Summer '14!
